Why I Bought the Insta360 X6 for My Event Production Kit

I paid for my own X6. The three questions every camera has to answer before it goes near a paying client — and why this one made the cut.

I bought this one myself. Ordered it from B&H the morning after the announcement and it landed in Texas the next day. Essential bundle, midnight black, extended warranty, selfie stick, extra batteries, charging case.

The specs I actually care about

  • Two custom Sony 1/1.1-inch square sensors, which Insta360 calls 1-inch equivalent 360 imaging
  • 8K at 50fps, 10-bit color with I-Log
  • User-replaceable lenses. This one matters when the camera lives near road cases, carts and cable runs.

Why an event videographer wants a 360 camera

Nobody on my crew is free to shoot behind-the-scenes footage during a show. Everyone is running a camera, a console or a stream. A 360 camera lets me clamp it, stick it or carry it, and decide the shot later instead of deciding it while I'm working.

What I'm still not sure about

  • Workflow, not image quality. A clip that used to take 30 seconds on a timeline now needs reframing first.
  • I haven't tested the AI auto-director editing tools yet, so I'm not going to claim they work.
  • Dolby Vision. I shot it on the Luna Ultra and fought the exposure and color in Resolve. The best setting isn't always the best setting for me. I'll test standard profiles and I-Log before this goes on a paid job.

Next up for it: a multi-day conference, eight cameras total, four in general session and four across breakout rooms, with Saturday as load-in.
