Epiphan LiveScrypt + ATEM Switcher Setup

Wiring the Epiphan LiveScrypt to an ATEM and keying live captions over program. The Ethernet gotcha, the inputs, and the key I'd recommend.

I own two of these and I'm not affiliated with Epiphan. Here's exactly how I wire one up.

Before you leave the shop

  • In the box: the device and a power cord. That's it.
  • There is no Wi-Fi. Bring an Ethernet cable to every venue.
  • Set up your account at go.epiphan.cloud and sync the device. You have to complete billing info or it won't work, because transcription runs on Google AI at $9.95 per hour.

Inputs

Audio: 2x XLR, 2x quarter-inch, RCA, 3.5mm stereo. Video: 3G-SDI, 2x HDMI, 2x USB.

My workflow, 100% of the time

ATEM program output via SDI straight into the LiveScrypt. Transcription output goes out over HDMI into a Video Assist monitor, which doubles as an HDMI-to-SDI converter, then back into the ATEM.

Keying it

  • Easiest: an upstream key cropped to show a couple of lines at the bottom
  • Better looking, and what I'd recommend: a downstream key set semi-transparent
  • Best practice: send a clean feed with no burned-in captions to the HyperDeck, then replace the video on the platform afterward so YouTube or Vimeo can serve toggleable closed captions

Two extras worth knowing

The device generates a QR code. Attendees scan it and the live transcript opens in a phone browser, with customizable font size and layout. And stop the transcription when you're done or you keep paying, then download the full transcript as a text or SRT file.
